10 Free and Cheap Fun Things to Do

It’s easy to get stuck in the mindset that in order to stick within our budget we must do nothing! Please do not deprive yourself of having fun, even if you are on a tight budget. There are plenty of free and cheap fun things to do.

A tight budget does not mean that you are doomed to be eating ramen every meal, or sitting on your couch watching Netflix every night. You can still add a little fun and excitement to your life.

And although I say you “can”, what I really mean is that you “must”. Not allowing entertainment in your schedule and your budget (even a tight one) may eventually lead to boredom and irritability, and I am sure you do not want that.

But…you may be asking…what are some free and cheap fun things to do that will still keep me on track with my financial goals?

Here are a few free and cheap things to do:

1. Get a library card

If you enjoy reading, sign up for a library card and browse your local library. Libraries not only have books. Some branches have movies, activities, and workshops. Most libraries also offer e-books and audiobooks as well.

2. Visit a museum

Some museums have free or discounted admission on certain days of the week, or for children or students. If you are in an area where there are some local museums, check them out.

3. Get outside – take a hike

Go on a hike or a nice walk in nature. Grab a map, or look online for hiking or walking trails near you. If you live in the city, walk around the town. Not only will you get some exercise, but you may even stumble across a new place you’ve never been to before.

4. Try wine tasting

Find a local winery, pack a lunch and enjoy an afternoon of wine tasting. It actually is not very expensive as long as you stick to just buying the tasting. Most wineries have very beautiful grounds for fabulous walks and pictures.

5. Game night

Invite friends over for a game night. Make it a potluck and have a blast enjoying fun, food, and laughs.

6. Sign up for a 5K or 10K race

Whether you walk it or run it, it’s a great way to get outdoors. There is a cost for the race, but it’s generally minimal and your training is all free. Sign up with friends and/or family and train together.

7. Head over to the Farmer’s Market

This is a wonderful way to support your local farmers and stock your home with fresh foods. It’s also just fun, walking around outside and mingling.

8. Go thrifting or check out the local flea market

You can generally find some pretty good deals thrifting or at the flea market and it’s kind of fun. Allow yourself a budget and go have fun being nostalgic.

9. Listen to live music

Concerts are generally pricey, but there are many places where you can go listen to live music. The local pub may have bands that play. You can also check out festivals that might be in your area, or nearby. Make a day trip out of it, pack some snacks and have fun.

10. Find free and cheap hobbies

If you need hobby ideas, check online. Here is a site I saw that has a huge list of hobbies. There are tutorials for just about anything. Find something new to learn.

Summing up free and cheap and fun things you can do

As you can see, there is no reason to skip out on the fun, regardless of what your budget looks like. There are so many activities that do not cost a ton of money, so get creative and promise yourself that you will enjoy your journey….every single step.
